European Space Agency says town of Assisi is sinking
October 27, 2011. The Italian town of Assisi has long been a magnet for tourists and religious pilgrims. However, they may be surprised to learn that the town is said to be sinking. According to the European Space Agency, the small town in central Italy is in fact sinking at a rate of 7.5 mm every year.
New Satellite images show changes in the earth that can measure ground movement down to a scale of a few millimeters.
If Assisi continues to lose ground at its current rate, it means that in 100 years close to 30 inches of the city will be underground.
