May 20, 2010. The Food and Agricultural Organization is calling on all of us to get angry about hunger.
FAO has launched an online petition to combat undernourishment which affects almost 1 billion people.
Their 1 Billion Hungry project calls on governments to make the elimination of hunger their top priority.
Chronic hunger affects one in 6 people. This means they lack access to sufficient amounts of food needed for development and a healthy life.
Their global campaign uses strong typography and language to attract people, saying enough is enough. And a yellow whistle encourages people to blow the whistle against hunger.
1 Billion Hungry also uses a video made by British actor Jeremy Irons in which he says we all have to get mad.
FAO hopes to attract petitioners through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
Within the first two days of the launch, 60,000 people showed their support by signing at www.1billionhungry.org.
Of the 1 billion hungry people, 642 million live in Asia and the Pacific, 265 million in Sub-Saharan Africa, 53 million in Latin America and the Caribbean, 42 million in the Near East and North Africa and 15 million in developed countries.
